We rarely send out UpDates more than once a month but this news just can’t wait for a press release. We want you, our champions and supporters, to be the first to know that We Are Up is the recipient of a grant of over $1.2 million from the California Department of Housing and Community Development! We Are Up is so grateful to Beth Burks and the Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) team for acting as an exemplary model of public/private partnership. As a result of our partnership, McKinleyville will be getting much needed improvements to its public transportation and making services more accessible through We Are Up’s infill housing development project. Under the grant, We Are Up will receive over $1.2 million in infrastructure support, and Mary Keehn, President of We Are Up, will grant title to We Are Up of 15.4 acres of land on which We Are Up will be located. This will position We Are Up to move forward with the design and implementation of its groundbreaking project, a unique housing and community development model that has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities, and promote economic vitality. We Are Up’s mission is to create a disability-inclusive, intergenerational community that offers permanent, affordable housing; job training; income opportunities; and mutual support systems for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), older adults, and college students. Additionally, We Are Up will provide temporary housing for healthcare workers and visiting medical professionals, addressing critical workforce shortages in Humboldt County’s healthcare infrastructure.
